When I was little, I wanted to be an actress, but I couldn’t play the roles I wanted to play. One of my biggest dreams as a kid was to play Lucy Pevensie from The Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe, but how can a little brown girl be the younger sibling of 3 White children? While I don’t know if Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, had the same aspirations, I do know that she faced her own difficulties in the entertainment industries with casting.
As I researched for this episode of the podcast, I became a bit enamored with Meghan. There were so many things I had in common with her as a Mixed woman and I wanted to share a little about her that I’ve discovered. Through her prior charity work and blog, I believe she has a beautiful heart and I can’t wait to see what she accomplishes as the Duchess of Sussex. I do know that her marriage in to the royal family has given little Mixed girls a woman to look up to and shown that mixed race marriages are becoming more common. I hope that this opens the conversation to what it’s like to be in a mixed race family and that people become more accepting of diversity through this very public example. Check out the podcast below for more on our first Mixed Feature, Meghan Markle.
